Mark 6:45-56

Jesus has just finished feeding the 5,000+, and if you remember, Jesus originally was sending the disciples across the sea to find rest after all their mission work. So, after all the people were fed and they picked up all the remaining bread and fish, Jesus sends the disciples back out on the boat to go to Bethsaida. After the disciples leave, Jesus goes alone to the mountain to pray.

As we read further, we find out that the disciples are struggling in the boat due to some wind. The whole time, Jesus was watching them. He was praying for them and watching them the entire time.

He heads out to them, and in Mark’s version of events, he states that he meant to pass by them. The disciples, afraid and still not fully understanding who Jesus was, were frightened. But Jesus reassures them:

Take heart; It is I. Do not be afraid.”

Mark 6:50

As I read this passage, it showed me a few lessons.

  1. Jesus is always watching out for me, even when I don’t realize or acknowledge it.
  2. Jesus reminds me to not be afraid in the storms of life. He is always in control.
  3. Nothing is impossible for Jesus. He defied the laws of gravity and walked across the choppy waters.

In this time for me right now, life can throw me some incredibly windy, choppy storms. Things I don’t understand or know exactly how to handle. But this passage was a great reminder that Jesus knows what is happening, He is prepared to help me as needed, and I need to have faith and not be afraid.

I pray today that this is a reminder for you as well that Jesus knows your struggles. He sees you and loves you and will step in when needed. Just have faith and don’t be afraid.
